Without even realizing what she is doing, she walks over to the phone hanging on the wall and lifts the receiver. She dials the number, a number she has tried to forget, pushing the buttons on the keypad with extraordinary speed. There was no way she would talk herself out of this now.
The phone on the other end of the line rings. She closes her eyes and concentrates on the sound.
And then she hears Genevieve’s voice. She blinks in surprise when she hears the recorded message.
“You’ve reached the home of Genevieve Tithing and James Anderson. We are not available to take your call right now, but please leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as possible.”
Stunned, Melinda hangs the up phone without saying anything. James Anderson… where was Wayne?
She frowns and realizes that her heart has started racing. If he didn’t live with his wife anymore, where did he live? And why hadn’t he called her?
She thinks back to the last time she saw him. Greg holding her close to him on her front porch. Wayne looking down at his shoes, forcing a smile, suddenly understanding that there would never be a place for him in Melinda’s life. She winces, surprised to feel tears forming in her eyes. If she had lost him for good, it was her own fault.
That left her with only one other option. She nods to herself and takes her car keys from the basket in the front hall.
It was time to speak to her father again.
