Finally, Greg breaks their reverie. “Come on,” he says, a broad grin on his face. “Let’s go tell you father!”
     “Ok,” she says, laughing. She watches as he gathers up his bag and rushes to the car, unable to contain his excitement.



     Melinda lingers a moment longer, turning to look at the frozen lake. The moon peeks out behind a cloud, flooding the land with light. The snow glows all around her.
     She sighs, a small smile on her lips. And finally, she says the name she had forbidden herself to even think about for so long.
     “Goodbye, Wayne,” she whispers. She fingers the new ring on her left hand as she gazes out onto the water, allowing a strange sadness to take over her and recede.
     And then, as if satisfied, she turns and walks back to the car where Greg is waiting.
     The next stage in her life was about to begin.
