He is just rousing from bed when she walks into the room.
“Hey,” he says sleepily, “Where’ve you been?”
She sits down next to him and tousles his hair lovingly. “Out and about,” she responds, kissing him on the cheek. She takes his hand and looks into his eyes. “There is something I need to tell you,” she says. “It’s something I should have told you before we even started seeing each other.”
He nods, looking grim. “It’s about Wayne, isn’t it?”
She nods her head. “I’m going to tell you everything. From how we first met to what that letter said. If you’re going to trust me, you need to know everything. And I want you to know, Greg. I want you to know because I love you.”
He smiles shyly at her last words. “Ok,” he says quietly. “I’m ready.”
She takes a deep breath and begins. She doesn’t leave anything out, and even reveals the strange circumstances surrounding her grandmother’s death.
When she is finished, she can tell that Greg is angry. “He used you from the beginning, Melinda,” he says, shaking his head in disgust. “He has lied to you and led you on from the start. And he’s still trying.”
She sighs and leans back against the pillows. “I know. It seems I can finally see that now. I was stupid.”
“No, not stupid,” Greg says, taking her hand in his. “He took advantage of you and it was never your fault. I’m sorry I didn’t see through his game sooner.” He sighs, looking sad. “I almost lost you, Melinda.”
“I wouldn’t have let you,” she says softly.
He doesn’t respond. Instead he pulls her to him and kisses her gently on the lips. She closes her eyes, content. Nothing had ever felt so right.
