She straightens herself and backs away. “If you touch me, I’ll scream so loud you won’t believe it,” she says, her voice cold.
“Fair enough,” he says, looking coolly into her eyes. “Your boyfriend came to save you, did he?”
“Leave me alone,” she says. “I don’t owe you any explanations.”
Before he can stop her, she takes off running and doesn’t stop until she is at the front desk of the resort.
“I have a serious complaint about an employee here. I am being harassed and I want this stopped,” she says firmly, still trying to catch her breath.
She doesn’t have to say anything else. She is whisked into the manager’s office where she tells him everything that has happened between her and Ralph.
When she is finished, the manager nods, his face looking grim. “These are serious allegations, Dr. Gardenia. You can be assured that we will conduct a full investigation into this. Would you like to report these accusations to the police?”
Melinda hesitates a moment, weighing her decision. Finally, she nods. “Yes. I would like to make a statement to the police,” she says confidently.
She had finally had enough. First she had been stepped on by her grandmother. Then it was Wayne. And now Ralph. She refused to take it anymore. “I’d like to talk to them as soon as possible,” she says.
Two hours later, she feels Ralph glare at her as he is taken into custody by the authorities. She tries not to look at him, willing herself to stare down at her hands as she hears him being read his rights. But she fails. She glances up. He is looking at her, but his face is expressionless, his eyes vacant. She takes a wobbly breath, forcing herself to break eye contact with him.
“We’ll let you know what happens,” the manager says. Melinda looks away from Ralph, happy to have had the distraction.
“Of course,” she replies. “Thank you again for handling this so efficiently.”
The manager nods solemnly. “Would you like an escort back to your suite?”
She shakes her head no. “I think I can manage,” she says, standing up.
She pauses, watching the police walk Ralph to the car, and then takes a deep breath. For once, she had done the right thing. She nods to herself and walks back to her suite, thinking all the while of Greg and how much she needed to be with him.
