She feels her heart sink to her feet when she sees him. Wayne. He looks as handsome as she remembers him. He is dressed in traditional doctor's garb: a long white coat, dress shirt, tie, a stethoscope resting on his shoulders…
"Are you alright, Melinda," she hears Greg whisper in her ear. He places a hand on her shoulder, concerned.
She turns to him and smiles reassuringly. "I'm fine," she whispers back, "I'm just nervous." In her mind she thinks, 'I'm not fine. The man I've been trying to forget has just walked through the door and I don't want him to leave.' She closes her eyes and rubs her hand over them.
When she opens them she sees Wayne looking at her. His expression is a mixture of shock, pleasure and pain. She smiles weakly at him. 'This is hurting him, too,' she thinks.
He clears his throat. "Well, I see I know a few of you already, but let me check over the list I have here and see who has arrived and who hasn't. Once that is done we can begin the orientation. We'll start with a tour of the hospital and then we'll go over each of your assignments." He glances again at Melinda, as if he cannot believe that she is there in front of him. Melinda stares evenly back at him, her heart thudding strangely in her chest.
She manages to get through the orientation. She stays towards the back of the group, Greg at her side, hoping that Wayne won't come and talk to her while Greg is near. But she knows she can't avoid him forever. As they get ready to leave, Melinda braces herself for an encounter with Wayne.
She turns to Greg. "Can we meet in the cafeteria in a few minutes? I'd like to speak to the Doctor for a moment," she says.
"Of course," he responds. "I'll buy you a coffee." He kisses her on the cheek and leaves the room.
Moments later she is face to face with Wayne Tithing.
