They have a blast the rest of the evening. Their conversation is mercifully free of any references to Wayne, Greg or her father, as well as Ralph's feelings for her. Instead, they have fun trying to win the silly games and riding the roller-coasters. And neither one of them do end up getting sick after all.
They walk back to her cabin at around 1 in the morning.
"Thank you," Melinda says when they reach the door. "This was a fantastic evening. I had so much fun."
Me too," he says, smiling. He reaches out and brushes a strand of hair off her cheek. Then he moves forward, as if to kiss her.

Melinda steps back and raises her hand. "Ralph," she says quietly.
He steps back, too. "I'm sorry," he says. "I don't mean to ruin the evening. Goodnight, Melinda."
"Goodnight," she says. "Thank you again."
She inserts her room key and enters the room, closing the door shut behind her. She goes over to turn on the lamp on the corner table, and notices Ralph still standing outside her door. She steps back a little and watches him, knowing he can't see her in the darkened room. Finally, he turns and walks away. Melinda involuntarily breathes a sigh of relief. Then she puts Ralph out of her mind and readies herself for bed.
