She follows him into a smallish room down the hall, a bit mystified. He gestures to one of the chairs in front of his desk and closes the door behind him. He pulls up a chair next to her and faces her.

"I'm just going to say it. Melinda, Genevieve and I have agreed to separate. We realized that we were both unhappy. She knows I'm in love with someone else, and we both agree… It's not fair to our son if we stay together."
He stops, looking at her expectantly. She stares back at him, shock clearly written across her face.
"I don't know what to say, Wayne," she says, shaking her head in surprise. "Are… are you ok?" she asks.
He nods quickly. "I'm fine. This is for the best. We've both known this for a long time… Finding the strength to finally say it was the hard part." He sighs quietly. "She's moving back in with her parents for now, until she can find a place of her own. I know she's been looking at apartments downtown, something big enough for her and Byron…" he drifts off, watching her.
Melinda gets up and walks to the window. She feels as if she has been punched in the stomach. What happens now? Suddenly, loving Wayne doesn't seem so wrong. She gazes out the window, trying to sort out her thoughts.
She feels Wayne's presence behind her. "Melinda, I want to be with you. Please tell me… Is this what you want, too? We can have it now. What we dreamed of. It's right here."
She feels a sharp pang of love in her heart. But there is more to it. There is pain that goes along with that love. 'Greg,' she thinks. It's only one word but it holds so much… 'What about Greg?'
"Wayne, this is such a shock," she says, turning to face him. "I had given up on loving you. I had given up on there ever being any hope for us. And then I gave my heart to someone else. And now…" She shakes her head helplessly. "I'm so confused."
"Listen," he says, touching her shoulder. "Let's take some time to heal. Both of us need that. And once you feel ready, we can take it from there."
She smiles softly and nods. "Ok," she says. "I can do that."
He nods back at her, smiling a little. He reaches out and touches the side of her face. "Don't make me wait too long," he says quietly.
She laughs, hot tears suddenly spilling from her eyelids. His touch still made her weak. 'I'm still in love with him. God, I love him, I really do…'
"Not too long," she says, smiling.

He pulls her towards him and kisses her softly on the lips. She doesn't fight him. His lips are warm against hers, and she reaches up and wraps her arms around him, prolonging the kiss. It had been so long…
"That's for all the time you'll make me wait," he whispers, his breath hot against her ear.
She sighs and nods, smiling shyly. Then she walks out of the room, closing the door softly behind her.
