They arrive at the hospital the next evening at 6:30. Melinda feels butterflies in her stomach; she is more nervous than she had expected. Greg holds her hand and squeezes it comfortingly as the desk clerks get the couple registered.
"You'll be meeting at the staff room at the end of the hallway there," one of them says, pointing the way. "The class starts at seven so you'll have plenty of time to review these." She hands them both a stack of paperwork and quickly plants a pen on each one. "Sign them and then return them to me."
Melinda takes the pen and picks up her pile of papers. "Thank you," she mumbles, her eyes skimming over the printed words before her. She turns to Greg and says, "I guess we had better get to that room. Looks like we have enough work here to last us until next year."
He laughs and takes her arm, gently guiding her down the hall.
The staff room is already filled with fellow students. Melinda smiles and says hello to the people she recognizes and then immediately sits down to read and sign her documents. She becomes completely engrossed in the legal mumbo jumbo. Her brow is knit with concentration as she reads certain sections over and over again to make sure she understands everything correctly.
She doesn't notice when the doctor in charge of their group enters the room. Everyone around her quietens and sits down while she continues to study her forms.
"Good evening ladies and gentleman and welcome to the first day of the rest of your life," the doctor says, laughter in his voice.
Melinda gasps when she hears the voice. She feels goose bumps rise on her skin and she shivers. She doesn't need to look up to confirm who the doctor is. But she looks anyway.
