Melinda rubs a hand against her forehead. She feels defeated and suddenly exhausted. She looks down at her hands, now folded neatly in her lap. She takes a deep breath, wondering how she should explain herself.
"Greg, you're right," she says quietly. "I did see Dr. Tithing today. And you're right, he was the man I was trying to get over when I met you. But I swear to you, there is nothing-NOTHING-going on between us now. You have to believe me Greg, please."
He considers her a moment and then shakes his head. "If you had told me, Melinda… But you kept this from me. If I had known…" He stops for a moment, frowning. "Did last night mean anything at all to you, Melinda? Anything? Or were you putting on a show for me?"
"Of course it meant something! It meant everything, Greg!" she cries out, turning to face him almost violently in her attempt to defend herself.
He simply nods and looks away across the room and into the kitchen.
Melinda watches him nervously as he sits lost in thought. He turns to look at her suddenly, sorrow filling his eyes. She feels a shiver of dread run through her body and waits for him to speak.
"I want to believe you, Melinda. I really do," he says softly. "God knows I love you. And I thought-maybe I only hoped-- that you felt the same for me." He sighs quietly and then continues on. "Perhaps it would be best if we spent some time apart. I just can't-" he sighs again, frowning. "I don't know what to think right now. And maybe I need time to think."
Melinda feels her heart sink at his words. She hadn't expected this. "You have to believe there is nothing going on, Greg, please. We met today… he had information about my father… How could I not meet him? I don't love him, I love you," she says, her voice breaking a little.
He nods. "I want to believe you. Give me some time… After last night… You must see why this hurts so much."
She doesn't reply but nods silently, hot tears suddenly rolling down her cheeks.
He gets up then, almost abruptly. "Goodbye, Melinda," he says.
She stands up. "Goodbye," she says quietly.
He strides across the room and walks out the door, closing it softly behind him. She stares at it for a while, and then falls to the floor on her knees, sobbing loudly.
