Melinda awakens to find sunshine streaming in from her bedroom window and into her eyes. She rubs her eyes sleepily and reaches for the clock beside the bed. 1:00. She had overslept. She puts her head back down on the pillow and sighs. Yesterday's events come flooding back to her suddenly and she winces, overpowered by it all. She hadn't expected her disappointment to taste as bitter in the morning. But it does. She forces herself to get up and makes her way to the shower. The hot water feels good on her bare back, and she stands there, letting the water rush over her as if it was erasing all her pain.
She spends the rest of the day feeling as if she were in a fog. Greg picks her up at 6. She is silent in the car, and he doesn't push her to talk. When she arrives at the hospital she makes her rounds as quickly as she can, hoping to avoid Wayne. Sitting at a computer at the front desk to type in her charts, she feels proud of herself for managing to stay away from him for the majority of the evening. She glances at the clock on the wall. Just two more hours and she would be free. She turns to her computer and begins typing quickly.
"How are you feeling today," she hears a voice ask.
She looks up, her heart at her feet. 'I suppose there was really no avoiding him,' she thinks to herself.
