Later that night, as Melinda is relaxing in a hot bath, she thinks back on her evening. She feels wild pangs of guilt at her phone call with Wayne. She had practically told him that she was still in love with him. She shakes her head in frustration. He had caught her at a bad time, that was all. She had been feeling vulnerable, and Wayne had called at just the right moment.
And then there was Greg. He had treated her with so much compassion, so much love. She remembers how excited he had been at the thought of her finding her father. And then how comforting he was when she fell into his arms and cried with bitter disappointment… She sighs heavily. "Why do things have to be so complicated?" she says aloud, sinking further into the warm water.
She falls asleep that night feeling depressed, discouraged and confused. She sleeps restlessly, her dreams haunted by the day's events.
