Five minutes later she is driving down the street, her hands gripped on the steering wheel. The map she had been studying in the kitchen is open on the passenger seat. There is a large red circle around Willow Drive. She goes over the route to get there for what seems like the millionth time. Take Highway 72 to Barrington, take the Barrington Heights exit, turn right, keep going until the 4th set of lights, turn left onto Willow Drive…
'What happens if he answers the door? What will I say? What if he doesn't recognize me? What if he doesn't want to see me?' she thinks over and over, the questions forming knots in her stomach. She turns up the radio to help calm her nerves.
'And just what am I going to do about Wayne's Halloween party?' she thinks suddenly. The thought leaves her feeling even more cold and nervous. She turns the radio up a bit more and attempts to sing along.
Before she knows it, she is crawling down Willow Drive, searching for house number 14. She peers into the darkness, trying to discern where she is. The houses on the street are nice; the neighbourhood seems pleasantly middle-class, and there is evidence that a lot of children live there. She sees house 8, then 10, and then 12… 14. She stops the car in front of the house and looks up at it in the darkness. Taking a deep breath, she steps out to get a better look.
