Entering her grandmother's small bedroom, Melinda finds the older woman sound asleep and snoring softly. She looks pale but at peace in her slumber. Melinda brushes the hair off her grandmother's forehead and bends down to give her a gentle kiss.
"I'm here, Gramma," she whispers, a sad smile on her face.
Her grandmother's eyes flutter open at the sound of Melinda's voice. She smiles weakly.
"Welcome home angel," she says. In seconds she is back asleep.

After watching over her a few seconds more, Melinda tiptoes quietly out and makes her way into the bedroom down the hall.
Standing in the middle of the room, she looks around detachedly. Not much in the room has changed since she was a little girl, save for the modern computer on the desk in the corner. She walks in the direction of the computer and picks up the phone to call the doctor and let him know she is home.
After waiting on hold for a while, she is finally connected to Dr. Pendleman.
"Melinda!" he says pleasantly, "I'm so happy you arrived home safely! I trust all is well?"
Melinda smiles at the sound of the kindly older man's voice. "Everything seems to be fine here, Doctor," she says. "Gramma Plum is sleeping peacefully."
"That's good to hear... We need to keep an eye on her. Actually, I was wondering if you would mind if I sent my associate by this evening to check in on her and give you a full update on her health. If it's too much of an inconvenience tonight, we can reschedule for tomorrow sometime... You must be tired from your trip--"
"No, no... That wouldn't be a problem at all... I'll be here waiting."
She hangs the phone up with a click, and thinks of the luggage she left in the trunk of her car. She sighs loudly.
'Time to unpack and then take a nice hot bath, I suppose,' she thinks to herself.
She turns her back on the bedroom and hurries downstairs to complete her chores.
