She arrives at the church early the next evening. There are flowers all over the room. She stops by a few of the arrangements and looks at who they are from. They are signed by neighbors and old friends of her grandmother. She sees a few from former friends of her parents as well. When she spots the urn on the alter, she loses her control and begins to weep. The reality of what has happened finally hits her: she is alone now. She hears people start to fill into the church so she attempts to dry her eyes and put on a brave smile. They begin to come up to her, offering their condolences. She smiles and thanks them, not really noticing any of them, wishing that the service would just begin and finish as quickly as possible.
Her spirits are lifted when she sees Wayne walk through the door. He looks tense and sad. And on his arm is a beautiful woman. Melinda knows right away who it is. His wife. Her heart sinks and she bites the inside of her cheek in order to prevent herself from bursting out crying again. He spots her and their eyes meet across the room; his are filled with an unspoken apology. She looks away, praying that she regain her composure and puts on her best brave smile.
