She stands. "And now you know why I have to do this." She grasps another sharp pin in her left hand and raises it up high over the doll. "NO!!!!!!!!!" Melinda screams, watching in horror as her mother brings the pin down into the doll's now limp body one last time. She hears Wayne scream in her grandmother's bedroom. Her mother drops the doll to the floor.
"Now I can rest," she whispers, a smile on her face. "And now you can rest, too."
She disappears slowly, the opposite of a photograph being developed. Melinda collapses completely to the floor and sobs.
Wayne comes to her a few moments later. His face is wet with tears. She already knows what he is going to say and nods her head, tears streaming down her face. "I'm so sorry…" he whispers, fresh tears springing in his eyes. "Melinda I am so sorry."
They cling to each other for what feels like hours, both of them crying in grief.
