She was walking by the gazebo when suddenly she stopped and looked up at me. My blood ran cold as our eyes met. I heard her moan again, as if she were crying, god there was such sadness in her voice… Suddenly, I heard your grandmother cry out as if she were in pain. She was writhing on the bed, Melinda, having another one of her episodes. Of course I rushed to her side trying to stabilize her." He sighs again. "And suddenly it stopped. Your grandmother's episode ceased, the moaning ceased, the woman disappeared… I ran to the window but she was gone." He looks down at his hands and shakes his head.
"You think I'm crazy don't you?"
Melinda puts her arm around his shoulders. "Of course I don't, Wayne…" She begins leading him to his bedroom. "Why don't you go and try to get some sleep? I'll watch over Gramma and wake you around dinner time for your shift. Is that ok?"
He nods, still considering her. "Melinda, this is something I wouldn't make up."
"I know," she whispers. "And that's what scares me."
Melinda waits by Wayne's bedroom door until she is sure that he is asleep. When she hears the tell-tale deep breathing and small snores, she takes her place back in her grandmother's bedroom. Her eyes are fixed on her grandmother's sleeping figure as her mind wanders to what Wayne has just revealed to her. She knew he wouldn't make something like that up. And it must have concerned him enough for him to tell her… She knew he was the type of man to keep his thoughts to himself. Had she really never heard anything strange in the house at night? She knew that she had. All throughout her childhood she remembered feeling a presence with her at different times. She remembered how a room would get cold suddenly and then return to normal. How she had heard footsteps outside her bedroom door when she knew her grandmother was asleep. And the moaning… She knew she had heard that moaning recently.
She shudders, mentally thanking god that the sun is out and shining. This isn't the type of thing you want to be thinking about at night. At that moment her grandmother awakens and Melinda gets up to tend to her and make her some lunch. As she cares for the old woman, her thoughts of creatures and things that go bump in the night fade away.
