That night, Melinda is startled awake by what sounds like screams coming in the direction of her grandmother's bedroom. In a panic, she jumps out of bed and runs to her grandmother's room.

She discovers her grandmother moaning loudly, bent over as if she was in severe pain. Fearful, Melinda runs to the phone and calls Dr. Tithing. After a few rings, she hears his sleepy voice.
"Come quick," she says, panicked. "My grandmother is in trouble... I don't know what's wrong... Please!"
"I'll be right there," he says, sounding suddenly alert.

Hanging the phone up, Melinda rushes to her grandmother's side.
"Tell me what happened Gramma. Where are you hurting?"
She leads her to the bed, and has her lay down.
"I'm fine now, Melinda," her grandmother says softly. "The pain is gone. I'm just very tired."

Dr. Tithing arrives soon after and checks over the sickly woman. She is fast asleep. He gestures to Melinda to meet him downstairs where they can talk.
"This episode follows the same pattern we have seen in her before. Sudden pain, and then relief. Her body responds as if nothing has happened, save for the extreme exhaustion. I'll be honest with you... This has me puzzled. I don't think it's her heart after all."
"What she needs is a hospital, Dr. Tithing...Wayne...But I need you to help me convince her to go to one." Wayne shakes his head. "Honestly, I believe she is better where she is. At this stage there isn't much that can be done," he says gently, putting one hand on her shoulder.
Her skin feels electric where he is touching her. Her heart is beating fast... 'Not now!" she thinks. Aloud she says, "You think she's going to die soon."
"Her body can't stand much more of this..." He looks into her eyes searchingly. "You need to prepare yourself..." "I understand," she whispers.
